Monarch-2 Dornier 335 Arrow

J. Richard Smith, Eddie J. Creek & Thomas H. Hitchcock
This, the second volume of the Monarch series, is devoted to one of the most unusual single-seat warplanes of the Third Reich, the Dornier Do 335 Arrow. Powered by two of the most powerful 12-cylinder engines available at that time, it was probably the fastest propeller-driven warplane of the Second World War. With one engine in the nose and the nose and the other buried within its sleek rear fuselage, its pilot sat in a spacious (by German standards) low-drag cockpit affording excellent visibility in all directions except one. The Do 335 sat high off the ground on its fully retractable tricycle undercarriage which afforded excellent access to its weapon or camera bay. The Do 335 was a large airplane A person of average height could walk upright under its large wings. It was well armed as confirmed by our jacket illustration. With two 20 mm and three 30 mm cannon (as in the B-series) it was certainly not deficient in firepower.

Monarch-3 recalls the extraordinary achievements of the Dornier company and its many and diverse aircraft designs. It also describes the history and development of the Do 335 and its projected derivatives; the Do 435, the He 535 and the large Ju 635 plus a number of other fascinating related Dornier projects. Appendices cover camouflage and markings and serial number allocations. A complete set of specifications and performance data is also included. Monogram as Close-Up 21 in 1983.
